The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a more defined direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.
The news follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following some time of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
Ben’s management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to persist seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to come.
The President
Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that change every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and pray your group can secure victory? The option is yours."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can anticipate more updates as development progresses.
