No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
