This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a six-month pause that began in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others instead handling more material or additional to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
