Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
