On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
