Van de Ven Double Halts The Toffees' Unbeaten Streak at Brand New Home Ground

Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
